Green Laurels The Lives And Achievements Of The Great Naturalists Donald Culross Peattie 9781444655841 Books Reviews
This book is a literary delight.
Consider Peattie's understanding of Thomas Jefferson, "perhaps very nearly the first American, who did not think eastward, look backward, toward Europe and particularly toward England. Washington and Adams behaved like Englishmen; politically, morally, in every mental twist, they were English gentlemen.
"Thomas Jefferson was different ... he had an American crick in his mind, a talent for minor inventions, gadgets, levers, pulleys, almanacs, calculations ... Washington might have gone back to England and bought back the old family place. But Jefferson bought forward; he bought west."
What politician or writer today today would dare suggest that Washington was at heart an English gentleman? This book was written when Americans were proud of the flaws, virtues and independence of mind which makes this country exceptional.
Such is the true joy of this book. It reflects the exuberance of Carl Sandburg's 'Chicago' poems of 1916. In addition to Harvard professors, Peattie got an education from schoolmates who argued "poetry and theology, vitalism and mechanism, good girls and bad girls, the collisions of stars, the feasibility of Plato's Republic and Aristotle's picture of the universe."
Peattie loves being American, free of the social and intellectual limits of old Europe and unafraid to see the flaws of his country with an astute sense of humour. So what if America produces "cranks, knaves, fools, ne'er-do-wells, lazy louts, religious maniacs, cracked-brain theorists, and fanatics for continence or incontinence?" If more people today shared his insights there'd be fewer financial meltdowns, foolish politicians, ranting preachers and vapid commentators.
Don't be misled by his candor. This is a serious book about great naturalists from Konrad von Megenberg in 1475 to Jean Henri Fabre in 1910. Their stories are told with wit and wisdom, elegance and relevance, insight and foresight. He wrote at a time when America truly led the world without holding "We're No. 1" signs aloft as a reminder.
In brief, it's simply good writing. My copy is a 1936 edition by Simon & Schuster; it's a tribute to the original work that it's been reprinted. The writing style may not suit modern quidnuncs, quibblers and quitters; but, it will delight every wordsmith who appreciates the clever use of words.
It's a rare gem, a delightful expression of America young in spirit and confident in manner before being fatally contaminated by political correctness, phony patriotism and a wearying burden of exceptionalism.
No one who loves America, good writing, candid biographies or clever humour will be disappointed.
An excellent book. Good science. There are so many great naturalists.
Very well written. But not easy reading. I'm still going through it weeks after receiving it.
Yes, I would recommend it if you are interested in the subject matter.
